How to partition sd, swap and Link2SD query?
« on: November 26, 2012, 05:48:23 AM »
Hello,

I just updated to CyanogenMod 10 and now I want to install application on my SD card but I can't move most of them (even with APP2SD or Move2SD). One of developer told me I need to partition the SD card and use Link2SD.

I tried to search on the forum but couldn't find the exact process, can someone please give me step by step instruction or point me in the correct direction on how to partition the card? I installed Link2SD without partitioning and it's allowing me to move stuff to card then why do I need to partition the card or am I missing something?

Also, I would like to enable swap to improve the phone performance. I read on the forum that 128MB should be the size of swap but I got confused when I read about ext2, ext4 etc. Can someone please tell me how to do that or any pointer? I have got 8GB class 2 card so not sure that will really help though.

Below is some information which may help,
CynagoneMod Version: 10-20121024-MADTEAM-galaxy5
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.14-jb++
Andriod Version: 4.1.2

Thanks you.

1. first, copy all the sd card's folders and files to ur pc.
2. then move all the apps in ur sd card to internal memory.(see manage applications->sd card tab)
3. Check if u have CWM 5.5.0.4. if yes, skip to step 4, otherwise install it through MADManager app (it is included in psyke83's latest cm7, or download from google play)
4. Reboot to recovery
5. select advanced->partition sd card
6. select yes ONLY if u have done steps 1 & 2 properly.
7. select ext4 partition size of ur choice
8. then select swap partition size. best if u select 32mb or 64mb, dont select more than 64mb. if u dont want swap, then select 0mb.
9. wait for it to partition
10. after it is done, go to main menu of recovery
11. connect ur phone to pc
12. select mounts and storage->mount sdcard
13. copy all ur backed up sd card's folders and files to ur sd card
14. then select unmount in recovery
15. then reboot
16. install an app like Link2SD or S2E from Google Play. i prefer Link2SD.
17. follow instructions in the app (if link2sd, select ext4). if u dont understand anything in s2e, ask in this forum.
18. (if u dont want swap, then skip to step 21), go to settings->cyanogenmod settings->performance->compcache and select 0%
19. (only if using psyke83's latest cm7, otherwise skip to step 20) go to settings->device settings->select "enable swap" and reboot. skip to step 21
20. if using any other rom(gingerbread), open terminal emulator, type the following:
Code: [Select]
su
madconfig swapon
reboot
21. enjoy!

Thanks a lot for such detailed instructions.

How can I check if I have CWM 5.5.0.4 installed on my phone?

Also, I can see psyke83 has added ClockworkMod v6.0.1.2 should I pickup the latest version? Once downloaded do I need to install it as well?

Yeah thanks mate..I figured it out in the afternoon but couldn't post that.

Anyway on other note I think my phone is lagging more than before after enabling the swap (swap size is 64mb). Any suggestion?

psyke stated that swap gives extreme lag on cm9. maybe this also applies to cm10. and are u using an sdcard of atleast class 4 for 64mb? if it's class 2, then use 32mb.
